A WEAKENED Chorley team proved no match for league leaders Matlock, who strolled to a victory which could hardly have been more clear-cut.

The hapless Magpies never looked like scoring let alone taking anything from the match and unless quality reinforcements, including a proven goalscorer, can be found quickly, their hopes of qualifying for the higher division of the revamped UniBond League next season will soon have virtually disappeared.

Manager Mark Patterson's team selection was unfortunately disrupted prior to the game with influential skipper Ian Leather unavailable because his father, himself a committed supporter of the club, sustained serious injuries a car accident.

Leather's steadying presence was much missed at the heart of a defence far too easily opened up by an eager home side.

A stunning 25-yards volley into the top corner beyond helpless ex-Rossendale keeper John Gillies from Michael Sisson after just six minutes set Matlock on their way and leading scorer Danny Holland found the target with a stooping header on the stroke of half-time.

A Jamie Vermiglio header from Lee Clitheroe's cross flew just wide but Simon Barraclough curled in Matlock's third on 80 minutes before Holland netted his 23rd goal of the season.
