A MAN who had a leg amputated when he was crushed in a bin wagon earlier this year, has been found dead in Radcliffe.

Mark Wood collapsed and died on Saturday at his home in New Church Walk. He had a history of alcohol abuse. A post mortem will be carried out to establish the cause of death.

In March, the 41-year-old suffered horrific crush injuries to his leg when he fell asleep in a wheelie bin in St Paul's Street, Bury, when it was loaded into the back of a Bury Council refuse collection wagon.

The vehicle's hydraulic compression system crushed Mr Wood -- who was homeless at the time -- before workers heard his screams and stopped the machine.

Firefighters spent 45 minutes freeing Mr Wood from the back of the truck. Special equipment was used to prise open the compression unit which had impaled his leg and severed an artery.
