Rover All View, with JASON WHALLEY

I'M SURE we can all remember the emergence of David Dunn.

I remember his first goal at Villa and the way he bossed games in the midfield in the promotion season.

All the talk then was of a new young exciting future England midfielder. One who would be the future of English football, the 'new Gazza' and he was our 'new Gazza'.

A Rovers fan and a Rovers player, he was living out the dreams of all Rovers fans and we took him in to our hearts.

While we were sometimes blind to his flaws, Souness always exercised an air of caution when talking about his young prodigy, always saying he had a lot to learn but had fantastic talent.

That we knew, and who better to learn from than one of the best midfielders of his generation. Everything was set fair.

That was until what turned out to be the latter stages of his Rovers career.

Apparently unwilling to listen to advice from his manager, the parting of the ways was inevitable and off he went.

Opinion was divided amongst fans. There were those who thought that Souness's man management was in question and that he should have swallowed his pride and stuck with him.

Then there were those who, although sorry to see him go, had to agree that he hadn't been pulling his weight and backed Souness.

Time would tell whether the right decision had been made and his early season form coupled with our slump intensified the debate among the Souey sceptics.

Recently though, the tide both for us and for him has turned, culminating in Rovers' magnificent 4-0 win at Birmingham on Saturday: a game in which Dunn was totally overshadowed by Barry Ferguson, his replacement.

Suddenly the Birmingham fans are not so happy with their record signing and the same things that Souey said are being repeated. It's one thing a manager saying something but fans won't be kidded. They have no hidden agenda.

I'm sure Souness takes no satisfaction from these events; in fact I'll bet he's greatly saddened. I know I am, for that potential that we all saw and hoped would be fulfilled in a Rovers shirt, may be going to waste.

The parallel with Gazza is a good one but I hope that, in time, he proves me wrong.

Getting on to the subject of the game and it was great to see us get back to back wins and both with clean sheets.

Now, like Bonnie Tyler, we've needed a hero over the last few weeks but you would never expect that person to be Andy Todd.

Since his return from West Yorkshire he's been nothing short of a revelation. His partnership with Short looks sound and as a result the confidence is back in the rest of the players.

Long may it continue because we'll always score goals.
