A MOTORIST who smashed into a car at the end of a high speed motorway police chase - putting two children in shock - has been jailed.

Burnley Crown Court heard driver Khizar Khan, 21, had his brother and nephew with him when he spun around twice after clocking up 120mph on the M66.

Khan was jailed for four months by Judge Christopher Cornwall.

The judge told him people expected custody when public safety was endangered.

He added: "You put others at very considerable risk of death or permanent serious injury."

The defendant, of Clifton Street, Accrington, had previously admitted dangerous driving.

The court was told Khan had cut in front of a police car in Royds Street, Accrington, causing it to take evasive action.

Officers tried to stop Khan's Cavalier as he clocked up 50mph on 30mph busy roads in the town at about 7pm in October.

The defendant went on to a dual carriageway and then on to the M66, reaching speeds of up to 120mph. He swerved from lane to lane and undertook at this speed.

Khan then lost control of his vehicle, spun 360 degrees, hit the back of another car and continued to spin.

He hit a barrier, spun 360 degrees again and came to stop in the centre of the lane.

Police approached, Khan was arrested but made no reply after caution.

Nobody was injured in the pursuit but two young children in the vehicle he hit were treated for shock.

Richard Hunt, defending, said Khan clearly regretted his actions.

He found himself facing prison. The defendant now realised how dangerous his driving was towards his passengers.

He panicked when he realised police were trying to stop him.

There was no other reason for him to behave in the way he did. He lacked maturity.

Mr Hunt added Khan, who had been working for a year, lived at home with his wife and parents and contributed to society.

Fortunately, nobody was injured although the children had to be treated for shock.

The defendant had been to jail before.

He knew what it was like to hear the clang of the prison gates.
