GAMES rarely finish so close, but after playing the game for just eight months, Tottington High School's under 14s girls basketball team pipped Liverpool's St George of England School, 40-38, to become North West champions.

There were outstanding performances from every player, with Laura Evans and Melissa Meek, in particular impressing on defence, while at the other end Kathryn Fudge and Charlotte Cutler amassed 28 points between them.

The team will now go on to play the North East champions in January to decide who will represent the North of England in a four-area national final in March.

Coach Zoe Newcombe is a former England player, having learned the game at Siddal Moor Sports College in Heywood, and on the way to beating St George Of England School, Zoe's team had to beat Siddal Moor.

The girls will continue to develop with a newly formed team, the Bury She Devils, that begins playing in the Junior National League's under 14s competition, in the New Year.
