I FIND it hard to grasp what Bert Hardwick is trying to address in his letter (Thursday, December 4). He tried to make issue of the Indian desire for independence from the British and hides behind a barrage of selected facts as to the consequences.
Sure, in India, as he states, there were some political affiliations with the Japanese and also, may I add, with the Germans. However, the same was true in the British isles and Ireland.
The facts are, the Indians had served with the British Army and India had served the British purpose. Let us somehow find the pride there. never mind the ifs, buts and the onlys. Maybe if Bert Hardwick delved further for the historical facts he might well be astonished why the independence did not come much earlier than it did.
If Bert Hardwick thinks freedom and democracy in Europe, Africa and Asia is due to the British, then why is the Empire no longer around? Dream on.
N MOMONIAT (Mr), (address supplied).
