HIGH school pupils who have written plays about car crime dangers saw their work premiered at Wigan Pier.

Drama students from Atherton Hesketh Fletcher and Golborne High were among the five Wigan borough schools each of which starred in the plays, which will later be performed in primary schools.

The inspiration behind the project was 'Every Mothers Son' - a hard-hitting dramatisation based on the real life story of an 18-year-old boy who's joyriding ended in tragedy. When Stockport's NK Theatre Arts Company performed the play locally earlier this year, they featured a recording of a speech made by the victim's mother and pictures of the tragic car smash. Since then, members of the Wigan & Leigh Community Safety Partnership have been working with schools, helping them put the plays together. Speaking on behalf of the partnership community safety cabinet member Councillor Keith Cunliffe said: "Drama can be a valuable tool for getting messages over and the warning about the dangers of joyriding is one message worth getting across.
