CLLR Emily Heath's response (Letters November 27) to my letter of the previous week misses the point and is part of the 'spin' to which I referred.

I have no problem at all with public interest, as she well knows, but I do have a problem supporting the broad statement that a 'member must have regard to the interests of the whole community' as a clause in the Code of Conduct. Who decides what is in the 'public interest'?

All politicians have a responsibility for the community but the context in which she brought the proposal was inextricably linked to what she and the Green Party believe is their public interest agenda - to close nuclear power stations.

Does that have regard to the whole community - no. Ask the employees of power stations whether it is in their interest?

The item for which Cllr Dowding has been suspended was exempt from the public agenda at the time and I make no comment on the right or wrong of that.

I will be more than happy to support a wording of any clause in a Code that is specific, not general and to inform the public, not spin to the public, that the debate is to take place.

Cllr Paul Gardner, Carnforth.
