GOLBORNE Parkside continued their quest for promotion when they visited Pilkington Recs and completed their first double of the season.

The 31-18 victory keeps them in contention for promotion as they reached the half way point of the season in pole position.

After a two week gap it didn't take Golborne long to get into the game when they scored a good team try inside two minutes from winger Anthony Spiers, converted by Martin Fisher. Fisher increased the lead to 8-0 with a penalty goal after seven minutes.

Pilkington's responded with a try which only made Golborne step up another gear and after 14 minutes play they lead 14-4 with a try from stand-off Andy Simms, goaled by Fisher.

There was no holding Golborne as they added further tries from Spiers and Zac Patterson to increase the lead to 22-4. A drop goal from David Long further increased the score before Pilkington's scored a converted try right on half time.

Golborne started the second half poorly, playing one man rugby. As complacency set in they started to lose control of the game and with 10 minutes remaining Pilkingtons had forced themselves back into the game with two unconverted tries to trail 23-18.

Golborne raised their game and made the match safe with a try from Gareth Dickinson plus two goals from Fisher.

With eight games remaining and only two away, Golborne's destiny is in their own hands but they must learn from this experience and not let complacency rule the day.

Golborne 'A' 12, Weaverham 22

Missed chances were the order of the day as Golborne lost a game they could and should have won.

In the first half Golborne dominated but failed to take their chances. They found themselves 8-6 down at the break having had two tries disallowed for forward passes and another through a knock-on with the line wide open.

Golborne's try and conversion was scored by David Hindley after good work from Kevin Coward.

Golborne started the second half well with forwards Carl Kelly, Chris Miller and Michael Prince all punching holes in the Weaverham defence. Ian Jones side-stepped his way over for a try, converted by Hindley, to make the score 12-8. Neil Muir, Craig Timmins and Ian Jones were all held up over the line.

Weaverham levelled the score with a try wide out. Golborne could have scored again but dropped the ball with the line open. Weaverham took advantage of the mistakes to add two further tries in the dying minutes.

Man of the match was Michael Prince closely followed by Kurt Wallace and Craig Timmins, who also finished top tackler.

Golborne U18s 22, Salford & Eccles 4

After last week's semi-final victory it was back to the bread and butter and a league fixture against a side that held Golborne to a one point margin the last time they met. In a tight first half Golborne took an early lead with a try from loose-forward Craig Ashall but Salford hit back to make the half time score 4-4 and another close encounter was on the cards.

As in recent weeks Golborne again proved to be the fitter side and regained the lead with a second try from Ashall goaled by Stuart Arkwright to make the score 10-4.

Midway through the half they extended the lead when centre Stuart Goulding finished of a good move for a try converted by Arkwright and just before the end Ashall capped a great game when he registered his hat-trick try, goaled by Arkwright, to give Golborne an impressive 22-4 victory.

Ashton U14s 6, Golborne14

Golborne won the local derby battle with a strong first half display that saw them dominate and score tries from Craig Keating 2, and Jimmy Tomlinson plus one goal from Scott Cash to build a 14-0 half time lead.

They went off the boil a little bit in the second half as Ashton scored a try but their defence held firm and they held out to record an important victory that, with four games remaining, leaves them at the top of the table going into the winter break.
