HISTORIAN Tony Ashcroft delved into the archives to provide a nostalgic trip into the past for the people of Bent and Bongs.
The Leigh-based local history officer's new book Images of England, Atherton and Tyldesley which contains 200 fascinating photographs dating from the mid-19th century to the present.
In his fourth book for Tempus Tony looks back on times when mills and mines dominated the landscape.
The pictures, all with informative captions, document the changes in transport, education, trades, businesses and sport in 10 absorbing chapters.
Although Wigan Heritage Service has provided the majority of the unseen photographs some have been loaned by private individuals.
