A TRIO of sports stars have brought honour to their school at national and county level.

The Fred Longworth High, Tyldesley, pupils have shone at sports including swimming, netball and rugby union.

Talented year 11 student Matt Kearns took on the cream of England's young swimmers and swam a personal best time to go on to finish sixth in the English Schools' 200m individual medley final in Gloucester.

Year 8 all rounder Rachael Taylor, captain of her years' netball and hockey teams, is a member of the Lancashire U14 netball squad.

She recently captained the county squad which defeated Cumbria 81-0 and Derbyshire 74-1.

Second row Sean Monaghan has been selected for the Under 16s' Lancashire rugby union squad following trials at West Park and Preston.

Sean, who has also represented Lancashire and Greater Manchester U13s and U14s, feels he was lucky to make the squad as in the final trial he was up against the best players in the country. His ambition is to gain an England cap.
