CHILDREN from a Leigh school proved they were all clued-up about fire safety when they took part in an area quiz.
When six junior school teams, all from year five, took part in the 'Learn not to Burn' quiz at Bolton Central Fire Station Leigh C of E school came out on top in a close-run contest.
The young competitors had to go through buzzer and observation rounds involving hundreds of questions about fire safety.
The competition started with 48 schools taking part from the Wigan, Bolton and Salford areas.
Operational firefighters visited all the 48 schools to give lessons in fire safety and stressed the importance of fire alarms that work.
Sub-officer in Community Fire Safety Mick Entwistle said: "The whole point is to get the message across that smoke alarms are something that everyone needs, if they are going to survive a fire. The alarm needs to be maintained through weekly checking and the batteries need to be changed every year. Everyone should also have a fire escape plan."
Schools which Leigh C of E beat included finalists from Bolton, Wigan, Prestwich and Monton Green.
All participants received a medal and a certificate.
