North West Counties league Division One: Salford City 0 Atherton Colls 1

AFTER two weeks without a league game, Colls travelled to highly placed Salford City and after a hard fought game deservedly came away with all three points from a 1-0 win.

The home side, who were clearly expected to win, attacked from the outset but Colls' rearguard stood firm.

New striker signing Paul Thompson relished his debut and was always a threat to the Salford defence. To be fair the home side dominated the first half without making many clear-cut chances.

But what a transformation in the second half when manager Alan Lord introduced all three substitutes at the same time and Colls were in charge from then on. Salford were forced on to the back foot and Colls should have had a penalty on 75 minutes but the referee dismissed the claims. Justice was done on 88 minutes when Stewart was brought down just outside the penalty box. From the resultant freekick Stewart crashed the ball home to give Colls a welcome but well deserved win.
