STONE flags in Burnley have been security marked following a spate of thefts in the Manchester Road Area.
Police have received six reports of stone theft in the last six weeks, prompting increased security measures and the distribution of posters warning residents to be on their guard against thieves.
Police community support officer Cathy Clough said: "Around half a dozen premises have fallen prey to thieves who have removed stone flags from gardens and pathways. As a result we have now security coded stone in the area with a special immovable, ultraviolet liquid.
"We hope this will not only deter thieves but also ensure that we can identify any stone later recovered.
"Also, posters have now been put up to warn people of the recent thefts.
"I would also be interested to hear from anyone who may know who is responsible for the recent flag thefts and from anyone who has been offered cheap flags which may have been stolen. That information can be passed directly to the police or to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
