BEING stuck in the 70s has taken its toll on rock giant Keith Hand.

So much so, that he contacted Channel Four's The Salon for a hair overhaul.

But while retro-rockers The Darkness take the charts by storm in lycra cat-suits, 6ft 8ins tall Keith, and his daughter Emma Jo, felt the time had come to move with the times and get his mop chopped.

He said: "I must admit I have been stuck in the 1970s and have had the same hairstyle for the past 25 years. My daughter has been going on at me to get my hair cut, and after seeing The Salon, I thought they were the right people to sort it. I just went for it."

Keith (55), who runs the Dr Rock guitar shop in Bolton Road, Bury, telephoned the show and told them about himself and that he felt he needed an extreme re-style. The team said they would love to have at go at re-styling his flowing grey mane and invited him to the London studios for a bit of a pampering.

He said: "I am originally from London, and have not been back there for so long. And I usually only get one day a year when I have nothing at all to do, so it was lovely just to sit back and enjoy the day. It was fantastic."

When Keith walked through the doors of the salon, stylist John shouted to him that he looked like Barry Gibb. But there was no trace of a Bee-Gee once the cut and colour was finished.

Slices of caramel and brown were used to transform the hair and the trendy messed-up style knocks at least ten years off him.

Keith is delighted with the new look, but fears he won't be able to get the cut looking the same as the professionals did.

He said: "They had all the products in the salon to make it look good, but when I woke up the morning after I had had it done, I looked in the mirror and thought "aargh". But after a bit of a fiddle it looked OK."

Clips of Keith's haircutting encounter were due to be shown on Thursday night's edition of the show.
