A KIND-hearted grandmother struggling to come up with present ideas for her 80th birthday decided to give her biggest gift to Burnley General Hospital.

Joan Knowles, of Hurst Crescent, Rawtenstall, decided to donate the money after her mother died from cancer around ten years ago and a close friend, who she didn't want to name, recovered from breast cancer.

The £425 raised at an open house party last week has now been given to the breast cancer unit at the hospital.

The money will be used to buy specialist equipment for the breast cancer unit.

Joan, who is married to Derek, said: "I wanted to do something that would help cancer sufferers. Everybody was really willing to help and gave generously because they all thought it was such a good idea.

"I have got to the age where I am past wanting presents and wanted to think of something I could do to help a really good cause.

"Around 50 people came to the party, which was a huge success because everybody pledged a donation.

"I feel like I have made somebody happy and that is the best birthday present anybody could ever wish for.

"I am thrilled that I have been able to do something like this and would like to thank my friend Brenda Tattersall, daughter Jackie Davidson, and husband Derek who helped me arrange the party because I couldn't have done it without them."

A spokesman for the breast unit said: "We are very grateful to Mrs Knowles and her friends and family for this generous donation.

"This heartwarming and selfless gesture by Mrs Knowles is very much appreciated by staff in the unit. The funds raised will be put to good use in the purchase of equipment."
