SHOPPERS are being asked to donate a Christmas present to Blackpool children who might otherwise have none.

Asda, Cherry Tree Road, is repeating its successful Christmas Wish Tree appeal. The appeal sees tags, containing the first name and age of a local child, hung on a tree at the store, with shoppers invited to donate a suitable present.

"We haven't even started promoting it yet and we have already received four bin bags full of toys," said organiser, Linda Matthews.

"We did this last year and the response was fantastic."

As well as toys, shoppers are being asked to consider giving other essentials such as socks and underclothes.

Asda has contacted local schools and other organisations concerned with child welfare to find children who would benefit form the generosity of Blackpool folk.

"Coming up to Christmas can be a very emotional time, when children see what others get. Our role is to make children happy and prepare them for education," said Sean Gallacher of Stepping Stones, a local group which helps transient children get back into school.

"Many of the children that we get are needy children. In order to help their integration into school we help them with various things. that can include clothing.

"Many of the children that we work with have specific needs which the Wishing Tree could help them with."

Once the appeal is finished, Marton Rotary Club will donate the toys and other presents to children.
