CONGRATULATIONS to Asda for rewarding their employees so well with long service awards (Bury Times, November 28).
Now, on the other hand, if you have given more than 30 years' loyal and dedicated service to Bury Council you receive a standard letter of thanks and nothing else!
That was the case with my mother who recently retired from a council-run residential home for the elderly and was allowed to walk out of the home on the day of retirement with nothing, not even a card or flowers from management.
My mother is a proud woman and walked away with dignity. Her close colleagues and friends took her out for a meal and bought her gifts, but Bury Council should be ashamed not to have recognised her long service. It used to be a privilege to say you worked for the council, but not any more.
L. EVANS,
Kent Drive, Bury.
