ONLY a few years ago millions of pounds was spent renovating Bury's indoor and outdoor markets, which are very profitable and very popular, not only with Bury people but with many from outside the area.

Now more millions are probably to be spent removing them and rebuilding on another site, resulting in market traders suffering inconvenience and probably loss of income and regular customers.

The council should remember that expenditure on this kind of project is consistently greater than originally estimated.

Market customers are mainly from an increasingly longer-living generation which enjoys and values a feeling of stability and security which comes from fixed and enduring entities. Is the war memorial, Peel's statue and the Two Tubs in danger if an offer from some investor is large enough?
