COUNCIL homes in Leigh judged to have a high fire risk are to have mains-linked smoke detectors installed.
Mains-linked detectors give long lasting protection, are difficult to switch off and have battery back-up in case of power failure.
Greater Manchester Fire Service says that only 20 per cent of council properties where fires occured had a working fire alarm because batteries were either missing or flat.
The fire service will work with local tenants and residents' associations and local schools in the area to raise awareness of fire safety in the home.
Leigh Housing Board member Fred Walker, who is also chair of the local Fire Authority said:
"Installing mains powered smoke alarms will improve chances of escaping and all council properties will eventually receive mains powered smoke alarms as part of the new re-wiring programme."
