POLICE climbed to the top of Pendle Hill in a vain search for a plane reported to have been seen in difficulties.
A Sabden man said he saw a flash of red from the sky which may have been from a RAF Washington bomber missing on a flight from Prestwick to the Azores.
And East Lancashire had so far escaped the great freeze which was griping 39 counties across the country.
