A 35-YEAR-OLD man caught in the 'freedom trap' was warned that he may go back to jail when he is dealt with for shoplifting.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Paul Wetton stole boxer shorts from T J Hughes shortly after his released from prison.

Defence solicitor Basharat Ditta said Wetton had received a short custodial sentence towards the end of last year but it had been enough to lose him his accommodation.

"He was released from prison with a discharge grant of £46 and little else," said Mr Ditta.

"He was reliant on friends to put him up and he had to re-apply for benefits. That can take some time and he took these items to sell in order to survive."

Mr Ditta said his client's story was one all too familiar to the courts with people being especially vulnerable to re-offending during the weeks after their release from prison.

"You will be aware of the weekend custodial sentences announced this week where offenders who would have received a short custodial sentence will be able to serve it at the weekend, hopefully allowing them to keep their accommodation and their employment," said Mr Ditta.

"My client would have been an ideal candidate for such a sentence had it been available."

Wetton, of Peridot Close, pleaded guilty to shoplifting at T J Hughes.

The case was adjourned for the preparation of pre-sentence reports. Wetton was bailed until February 18.
