THE WHEELS are about to come off the gravy train for Blackpool's illegal car traders, says Blackpool Borough Council.

The council's Trading Standards office is clamping down on sellers parking cars on-street with 'for sale' signs in the windows, causing a 'blight' on busy roads.

Officers received 15 complaints last month about cars for sale parked along or near Whitegate Drive, Lytham Road and Mossom Lane.

And Trading Standards, backed by the police and the DVLA, are warning sellers that on-road sales amount to street trading and therefore a licence is required from the council.

"Illicit selling will not be tolerated," warned a council spokeswoman.

Both traders trying to 'mask their trade status' and genuine private sellers who try to sell poor quality or unroadworthy cars on-street will be targeted, she said. Sellers will first be given a written warning. That will be followed up with a telephone call to the number advertised on the 'for sale' notice. If the car is still not moved officers will report the seller to the police which could lead to prosecution and the car being taken away.

Tim Coglan, Blackpool Trading Standards manager, said: "Cars parked illegally or inconsiderately can cause obstruction for vulnerable pedestrians who are unable to find safe places to cross the road. This is particularly a problem for children who cannot see around vehicles or be seen by passing motorists.

"Whatever the reasons behind the sale, the cars have been causing a nuisance in recent months, and householders have had enough."
