Leigh East 35 Wigan St Pat's 12: DON'T count Leigh East out of the Arriva Trains Conference top six play-offs.

That was the message that came loud and clear from Grasmere Street as East saw off old rivals St Pat's in comfortable, confident fashion.

Scoring so many points against St Pat's is no mean feat. But there can be no argument that on the day East were far superior.

Andy Rasburn and Darren Fletcher worked hard to keep the visitors in the game but errors forced by East's endeavours were to prove costly. St Pat's could do little to contain the likes of John Taylor, Mark Kay, Mark Starkie, Lee Wingfield, John Gunning and Danny Kilshaw.

Yet St Pat's managed to keep in contention until early in the second half when two quick Wingfield tries ended their resistance.

There were only two minutes on the clock when Ian Lewis's decoy run foxed the defence and a brilliant final pass from Taylor created a try for John Woods.

Liam Rowson collected the second try, leaping above the defence to collect Kilshaw's high kick. Kilshaw, outstanding at scrum-half, added the conversion and then knocked over a drop goal for an 11-0 lead.

St Pat's full-back Damien Charnock pulled a try back and when Jason Fishwick added the extras, the Wigan side were only five points in arrears at the break.

However, international second rower Wingfield showed his versatility with two quick tries from the centre position to open up a handy lead.

Although Rasburn crossed for St Pat's the game was as good as over when Kilshaw, who had converted one of Wingfield's tries, put over two quick penalties.

East continued to apply the pressure and Kilshaw sealed the win when he scampered over. Finally, with two minutes to go, Darren Hall went in at the corner and Kilshaw converted from the side-line as St Pat's lost their cool and had Deon Duell sin-binned and David Hales red carded.
