PLANS for a comprehensive crackdown on teen yobs are set to be approved by councillors next week.

The aim is to ensure Burnley Council, police and other groups work more closely to purge the town of youngsters regularly causing trouble.

Recommendations to set up an anti-social behaviour team are expected to be approved by the council's executive on Tuesday.

Anti-social behaviour is currently tackled by different groups working within their own organisations, although the council's anti-social behaviour officer, Mike Przbysz, works closely with police and community wardens.

Last week, police spoke to dozens of youngsters as part of a clampdown on nuisance behaviour in the Trinity area.

Coun Linda Gauton, executive member for public protection and community safety, said: "There is a recognition that we need to be doing more.

"We know anti-social behaviour has a significant impact on residents who are fed up with their lives being made a misery by a minority of people."

The yob-busting team, which could be up and running as early as the summer, will operate from a single headquarters in the town and would involve people already working on anti-social behaviour issues.

These could include representatives from the council, police, fire service, Burnley and Padiham Community Housing and a youth worker.

As well as focussing on enforcement by issuing Anti-social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs), the group would also look at ways of educating offenders and offering support and prevention to stop problems.

The scheme has been awarded £25,000 from the Home Office for the next two years, although money from other sources will also be needed.
