POLICE in Pendle do not believe banning boozing on the streets will benefit Barnoldswick.

Inspector Chris Saville was asked to look into the possibility of following the lead of other towns and creating designated 'no alcohol' zones in the town and other parts of West Craven.

But in a report to Pendle Council's West Craven Committee, due to meet on Tuesday, he states that such a scheme would not benefit the area.

In the report Mr Saville said: "Such designation would detract from the quality of life for ordinary citizens in what is a semi-rural location.

"Visitors to the area enjoying a picnic with a glass of wine could find themselves at odds with the legislation for example." He said a "reassurance plan" had been implemented, which included police officers and special constables providing a high-visibility presence, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, to reduce drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Mr Saville added that the Barnoldswick Against Night-time Disorder and Earby Pubwatch initiatives had also been successful in identifying and barring certain individuals from licensed premises.

Barnoldswick Councillor David Whip said: "The problems we have in Barnoldswick revolve around the number of people using the pubs and clubs.

"But we don't really have a problem with people drinking on the streets, which is why an alcohol ban would not be suitable."
