LEIGH RU's first XV pack built the foundations for a 44-21 home win over Wirral.

Leigh opened the scoring with an early penalty goal by Wilcock and with the forwards exerting early control, a strong driving maul was finished by P.Liku, making his first team debut, to touchdown. Wilcock added the conversion for a 10-0 lead.

Leigh continued to dominate in the scrummages and a quickly recycled ball allowed Wilcock to cross and convert a further try. Leigh were rampant at this stage and Liku scored his second try following a clever chip over the defence from fly-half Jones. Scrum-half Peacock got in on the act when he squeezed through a gap from a maul close to the line, both tries converted by Wilcock for a 31-0 lead.

Wilcock tacked on a further two penalties but injuries in quick succession to Liku and Lee disrupted things. Despite this, Peacock darted blind from a midfield scrum to feed winger Bridge who turned the ball inside for No 8 Sutton to score, Wilcock again converting.

When Wright went down with a leg injury, leigh were down to 13 and Wirral capitalised with two easy converted tries in the final minutes.

Hawks 14 Crewe 3

The Hawks' good run in the league this year has been based on an excellent defence. The Leigh line held firm until the interval with just a 3-0 deficit.

As the second half developed Leigh's fitness again told and they started to get a grip on the game. As the tides turned, a series of defensive scrums on the Crewe line resulted in turnover ball which was whipped out wide for M Devall to cross the line and give Leigh the lead with 15 minutes to go. Crewe came back strongly until, against the run of play a breakaway on the left hand side resulted in another try for the impressive Jason Carson. Devall converted both tries.

Tofts 14 Sandbach 7

The Tofts secured another league win. The Tofts were back to full strength and after weathering the early storm, they began to take control. Yates scored their first try after excellent work from the forwards had created several phases of possession. Porteous tagged on the conversion.

In a game of few chances, it was number 8 Smith who broke Sandbach's resistance with a characteristic charge to the line which four defenders were powerless to prevent. Yates added the two points.

A late try was little consolation for the Cheshire set as they went home defeated.

Lymm Colts 0 Leigh 5

Leigh won a fierce defensive battle thanks to a superb solo try from winger Scott Williams.

Facing the wind, Leigh took the lead when Williams fielded the ball deep inside his own half and went through the whole Lymm side for a superb try in the corner.

Leigh defended strongly thanks to good work from props Ben Halton and Craig Williams. There were other strong performances from David Ashurst, Matt Ashbrooke, Michael Murray and Matt Morgan.

Leigh U15s 64 Littleboro 5

Leigh piled on the points against an inexperienced but committed 'Boro' side. Knapman opened the scoring, quickly followed by Adams and Cunningham. Knapman was then awarded a penalty try, for tripping, and Forshaw jinked down the touchline to score. McNelly scored his first of the season with a rare turn of speed to put Leigh in control at half-time.

Littleboro made life difficult for Leigh in the second half, but Knapman completed his hat-trick, Jackson's support play earned him two deserved tries and Andrews finished the scoring. Rushworth converted six and Knapman one
