TENACIOUS wide man Dean Calcutt is ready to bang on manager John Coleman's door to fight for a new contract.

The Accrington Stanley midfielder has had a stop-start season through injury and suspension and is currently waiting for surgery on a couble hernia.

But Calcutt is adament that the problem is not serious enough to keep him on the substitute's bench.

"I still feel I'm able to play 90 minutes," said the Yorkshireman, who has only made cameo appearances in Stanley's last few outings.

"It was painful at first but it's not restrictive at all now. I'm just not getting a chance to play with the 4-5-1 system that we've been using.

"When I've come off the bench we've switched to 4-4-2 if John wants to change things or we need a goal.

"I'm just trying to do my best whenever I get my chance, but I want to play more than that."

Calcutt, whose two-year contract with the Reds expires at the end of the season, added: "I might go and knock on John's door because with us going full-time I want to prove myself.

"He welcomes that if you think you should be playing because it shows that you care.

"I don't want to leave Accrington but we'll have to wait and see what happens because I've been unlucky with injuries this season.

"I broke my wrist and was out for about five weeks with that, and I was out for a month when I discovered I had a double hernia.

"I couldn't kick a ball at first but I'm on painkillers and now I feel I can carry on playing until I need surgery."

Calcutt is currently on a waiting list. But while he is keen to get the problem rectified, he hopes he doesn't to go under the knife until the end of the campaign or early close season.

"If I get a call in the next week or so, then so be it. But ideally I'd like to have the operation soon after the season's finished then I have all summer to recover and be fit for pre-season training," he said.
