RAMSBOTTOM United manager Vince Overson could be forgiven for feeling rather smug after Tuesday night's win, given the criticism aimed at him and his underacheiving squad from some quarters.

But in keeping with the honest and consistent way he has conducted himself since taking over the reins at the Riverside, he prefered instead to explain how his team is still evolving.

"I don't want to tempt fate, but I think we are starting to turn the corner," he said.

"We are now looking more solid in the middle and players like Gareth Gardiner are starting to track back.

"He bombs forward, which is what I want him to do, but now he's starting to track back, which is also what I want him to do.

"New signing Liam Boden did a great job for us last Saturday, but he picked up a groin injury, so I moved Clarkey into the holding role in the centre of midfield and he did very well in an unacustomed role," explained Overson.

"He did what I asked him to do and that's all I ask, give me 100 per cent and do your job. I've told them that from day one.

"They are starting to understand the way I work and I am starting to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses.

"The good thing is we have lots of games in hand and lots of points to claim. It's simple really, the more we play the more understanding we develop."

He would now like the supporters to get behind the team and suspend judgement on his performance for the time being.

"Judge me and the team at the end of the season," he said.

As for tomorrow's visit of Alsager, he is expecting another tough game.

The Potteries side currently lie fifth in the league table, the two teams fought out a 1-1 draw in Rammy's opening game of the season at the Town Ground.
