Waggon and Horses skipper Matt Garner netted two second-half penalties as his side won a thrilling Terry Cattermole Trophy final at the Interlink Express Stadium.

The Clitheroe club, in its first season in Division One, inflicted the only defeat of the season on all-conquering Division Three champions Griffin's Head.

Griffin's Head started this gripping contest brightly, with Haworth at the centre of several good moves in the opening few minutes. However, Waggon scored from their first attack after just eight minutes.

Garner broke down the right-hand side and shook off two challenges before squaring the ball for Tom Bartlett to net from close range. Having conceded against the run of play, the Huncoat side were obviously stunned but gradually found their way back into the match without posing too much of a threat to the Waggon goal.

On the occasions when they did get into dangerous positions, they found the Waggon defence, with Curtis outstanding, in uncompromising mood. However, Griffin's Head did finish the first half strongly, with Haworth, Addison and Davies all going close to an equaliser.

Building on their encouraging end to the first period, Griffin's Head began the second half positively and their attack was bolstered by the introduction of substitute Gabriel on 53 minutes.

Barely 10 minutes after his arrival, Gabriel was the toast of Huncoat as he equalised from close range following excellent wing play from Howarth.

However, just as it seemed that the Division Three side was in the ascendancy, referee John Fowler awarded Waggon & Horses the first of two penalties within seven minutes.

Garner was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area and the Waggon captain picked himself up to convert confidently from the spot.

Waggon fans were still celebrating the goal when they were given greater cause for cheer. The referee awarded a second penalty following a challenge on Coulter and, once again, Garner won his personal battle with Griffin's Head keeper Lord.

However, the drama was not yet over for the vocal crowd. Just when the Clitheroe side seemed to be cruising towards their first knockout trophy, Griffin's Head captain Parker scored the goal of the game with a ferocious free-kick from 30 yards out. This goal obviously galvanised the Huncoat side and set up a thrilling finale, during which the Waggon keeper Woodhead had to be at his best as Griffin's Head sought an equaliser and extra time. In the event, however, Waggon & Horses held on to claim the trophy and spark jubilant scenes among the Clitheroe supporters.

Matt Garner had double cause for celebration for, as well as receiving the coveted Terry Cattermole Trophy from ex -Burnley star Andy Farrell, he also picked up the Man of the Match award.
