THE responsibility for managing Burnley's sewers is set to change after the council agreed to give up its control.

From April 1, United Utilities will take over control for the management of the sewer network.

The company will only affect the public network and not private sewers or drains, such as pipes leading from homes to the public network.

Day-to-day maintenance and operations, including the supervision of new sewers on building developments will be controlled by their Network Operations teams.

Both the council and United Utilities intend to make the transfer as smooth as possible and will continue to work together to maintain customer service levels.

After the transfer problems should be reported to United Utilities be telephoning 08456 020406.

Any queries regarding private drainage will still be answered by Burnley Borough Council during office hours. Emergencies outside office hours should be reported to the Council's emergency out of hours service on (01254) 384940.
