TONY Grant will today discover if he needs surgery for a torn cartilage.

The Clarets midfielder has been sent to a specialist following scans on the injury that forced him out of the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest six days ago.

But boss Stan Ternent is still hopeful Grant can delay any operation until First Division safety is secured.

Ternent said: "The knee has settled down quite well, but on the scan there was a little something so Tony has gone to see the specialist.

"He definitely wouldn't have played on Saturday, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we can still get him back.

"If he can get through to the summer and then have it done, that would be smashing."

Grant was one of several injury concerns for last weekend's First Division game with Wimbledon, which was postponed at the 11th hour for safety reasons.

And despite several relegation rivals taking advantage of Burnley's inactivity - with Derby now able to dump Ternent's troops into the relegation zone for the first time since the opening weeks of the season should they pick up any result at Sheffield United tonight - the Clarets chief is not to disappointed at having an enforced break.

He said: "We had one or two other knocks, so in many ways the postponement may have been a little blessing in disguise.

"The results elsewhere aren't really of great importance to me. It's what we do that counts and I am still looking for four wins."

Ternent also knows time is running out to bolster his numbers with a final loan signing before Thursday's deadline.

But he remains adamant he will not add to his depleted squad unless the right player becomes available.

Ternent said: "I am looking, but whether anyone will give me a player is another thing.

"Also, what do I get - a centre back or a centre forward?

"David May is one game away from a two-match suspension and if I could guarantee he doesn't pick it up, I could go for a centre forward. "If he does get it after I've done that, I'm stuck.

"That's something I need to consider, but that's still only if someone is available because I won't just take someone for the sake of it."

Meanwhile, the Wimbledon game has been quickly rearranged following Saturday's postponement.

The Turf Moor clash will now take place on Tuesday, April 20 (KO 7.45pm), falling between Burnley's trip to Cardiff City on Saturday, April 17 and before the home game with Derby a week later.

Ticket details for the Dons game have not yet been confirmed.

Clarets fans are reminded that Saturday's away game at Bradford is pay on the day for visiting fans.
