CHORLEY never recovered from the loss of two early goals and the concession of two more in the second half enabled Workington to gain ample revenge for their 4-1 defeat at Victory Park at the start of the season.
After this frail performance, only a super-optimist would suggest that the Magpies can still make the top thirteen.
Over-reliance on an inefficient offside trap cost Chorley two goals and the visitors' defence was given a torrid time throughout by the pace and skill of the Workington strike-pair Glenn Murray and Steve Archibald.
Murray bagged the first two goals on 12 and 17 minutes. Firstly, a through ball found both Murray and Robert Ennis racing clear and the former blasted a terrific shot beyond Graham Bennett.
The deputy keeper pulled off a great save from Murray before the striker added the second goal, netting from the rebound after Archibald's shot struck a post.
Little had been seen of Chorley in attack but Danny Queeley eventually got in a good header, which was deflected for a fruitless corner
The home keeper then made a smart save from a Jamie Vermiglio header as half-time approached.
Workington went three up on 59 minutes when Archibald made a nonsense of Chorley's offside tactics and strolled through to flick the ball nonchalantly past Bennett.
The home side continued to play fast, free-flowing football and Bennett made another excellent save from the irrepressible Archibald. The keeper then had to back-pedal smartly to tip over a teasing lob from substitute Graham Goulding.
Chorley came nearest to a late consolation goal when, from Lee Pryers' fine cross, Lee Ashcroft's shot was smothered by the keeper darting from goal.
Two minutes from time, a lapse by Billy McCartney, who gave the ball away as he came out of defence, presented Ennis with the chance to make it 4-0 with a fierce low cross-shot.
This was a disastrous night for the Magpies, completely outplayed and outclassed by a side full of confidence and who look set now to claim a place in next season's revamped UniBond Premier Division.
