ORGANISERS of this year's Darwen Gala in August are hoping it will be the best yet and are encouraging people to start thinking now how they can better it.

Members of the community are being asked to come up with ways of improving the road parade, which makes its way through the town centre from Anchor Road to the gala field in Borough Road.

Last year, more than 3,000 people lined the streets of Darwen for the gala which featured attractions such as a World War Two tractor, a Russian missile launcher and an Elvis impersonator in a red Chevrolet.

More than 30 vehicles including community floats took part in the colourful road parade but people are now being invited to come up with even more original ideas this year.

Chairman of the gala committee John Sturgess said: "We want the parade to be as colourful and varied as possible.

"People can walk in fancy dress, decorate a float or perhaps drive in their classic car or motorbike.

"The more original the idea, the better. We welcome community, business and private entries."

The gala, which has been run by a committee for the last 24 years, is Darwen's most popular free event and gives local charities the chance to promote themselves and raise money.

It takes place on Saturday, August 21. Parade entry forms are available by ringing 01254 773795 or 01254 706510.
