WHEN Bernard Bennett threw away an old carpet at an official rubbish dump he hardly expected to pick up a £50 ticket for littering.
Atherton pensioner Mr Bennett, of Marton Drive, went to Chanter's Industrial Estate at Hindsford last month to get rid of an unwanted carpet, but this week he was mystified to receive a £50 littering fine from Wigan Council's environmental health section.
Mr Bennett's bemused wife Barbara told the Journal: "Apparently a litter warden claims he dropped a supermarket till receipt from the car when he took the carpet to the tip. It's ridiculous. We were disposing of our rubbish like responsible citizens. We are not litter louts.
"The tip attendants couldn't believe it when he told them about the fine. They agreed it seems a funny place to position a litter warden."
A spokesman for Wigan Council said: "We are aware of the circumstances and are currently reviewing the situation."
