BURNLEY Council has pledged to tackle bad landlords who are renting out poor quality houses.

The council recently launched its Good Landlord and Tenant Scheme, which aims to improve the borough's private rented housing stock.

Many landlords and housing agents have already signed up to the scheme and are keeping their houses in good condition and ensuring they comply with all legal standards.

At a recent meeting between the council and those who are already part of the initiative it was agreed that poor conditions for tenants would not be tolerated.

The council pledged to take "quick and effective" action against landlords who do not keep up with their responsibilities.

Council environmental health and housing officers will be asked to take enforcement action against bad landlords.

Coun Peter Kenyon, the executive member for best value and resources, said: "I really do feel that our Good Landlord Scheme is now starting to provide real progress and benefits.

"The council is committed to improving housing standards in Burnley."

John Sharpe, the chief executive of East Lancashire Landlords' Association (ELLA), said: "Members of the scheme are excellent landlords and managing agents.

"The council is aware of our high standards and helps us to keep in touch with good tenants. However, we are concerned that not all tenants are getting a good deal from their landlord and to that end we are encouraging and assisting the council to get to grips with those poorer performing landlords, who we all know do exist."

The council is urging tenants who have concerns about their landlord to contact them for help and advice in confidence by writing to Burnley Borough Council, Red Lion Street, Burnley, BB11 2AE, telephoning 01282 425011.
