PADIHAM town councillor Andy Tatchell has proposed a discussion document of ideas aimed at improving not only Padiham, but also the lives of people who live in the town.

In ensuring that the town council takes a leading role in Padiham's regeneration, Andy insists that it is necessary to form realistic objectives and work towards them. The council ought to take on a pro-active role rather than just tackling issues as they happen.

Andy would like to emulate the success of the markets in Skipton, Todmorden, Clitheroe and Hebden Bridge, and he believes that Padiham is more than capable of becoming just as popular.

He also proposes that the council should work closely with the local sports club and other organisations.

ALL change in the shops on Manchester Road, Hapton. The chip shop being operated by a Chinese family is proving to be immensely popular.

The newsagent's business currently at 62 Manchester Road is moving to larger premises at 66/68 Manchester Road and will be run by the present owners of 62 Manchester Road as an off-licence and newsagents. Stephen and Gillian are looking forward to the move which has improved the appearance of the main thoroughfare through Hapton.

RICK Hayton, group manager for the traffic and safety department of Lancashire County Council, has written to Hapton Parish Council outlining the proposals for a 'Parish Partnership on Highway Issues'. He asks that the council submit a prioritised list of no more than four separate issues which would be the basis for an annual business plan. Examples are quoted as traffic issues, public transport and rights of way matters.

These proposals are of great interest to Hapton as there is concern about the heavy traffic and the increased use of Manchester Road as a 'lead-in' and out of the M65.

THE annual general meeting of council tax payers is to take place at Hapton's village school tonight at 7.30pm. Members of the parish council will be present and the guest speaker is County Coun Marcus Johnstone. All village council tax payers welcome.
