POLICE said 82 cars involved in criminal activity have been targeted in a clamping exercise in Hyndburn.

Vehicles belonging to known criminals or cars suspected of being used for illegal activities were targeted by police and police community support officers.

Police said that in Accrington and Great Harwood, 36 vehicles with no tax were clamped and 46 were removed and crushed.

And 15 vehicle owners were charged with having no insurance. A police spokesman said: "We are not targeting innocent members of the public but taking criminals off the road."

The clamping operation was organised by community support officer Ron Fielding and the DVLA.
