LEIGH Harriers super veteran athlete Derek Howarth added to his medal haul at the British vets Cross Country championships on Saturday at Durham.

In the biggest field of over 70 runners this season Derek won an outstanding silver.

In the European indoor championships in Germany, Derek won another silver running for the British over 70s' 4x400 relay team. He also came fifth in the 3000 metres and the European Cross Country Championship and seventh in the 1500 metres.

Harriers' senior men and women competed in the Haigh Hall road relay. The women finished an outstanding second. Anne Powell set fastest time of the day in 20m 7secs. Kazina Teahan recorded the fourth fastest 22m35secs, then Rebecca Howarth ran the third leg in 23m 59s and handed to Amanda Fearnley in second place. Amanda maintained Leigh's position in 25m 23s.

The B team of Eileen Castledine, 27m 04s, Sarah Cain 28m 31s, and Karen Forshaw 29m 28s were fifth.

The senior men's team gave a confident display. Phil Foster ran 19m 11s for fifth place in the first leg, Martin Conroy ran 20m 17s on the second leg in sixth place and 17 year-old Alex Urmston recorded an excellent third leg time of 19m 54s.

Neil Pendlebury ran the last leg in 21m 43s and the Leigh team finished 11th overall.
