A PENSIONER who died after falling down the stairs had banged her head on the floor, an inquest was told.

The hearing at Burnley Magistrates Court, was told how Maude Lord, 91, used to go down the last two steps backwards and was found on January 19, flat on her back with her feet resting on the first and second steps.

She had lived at her home in Primrose Street, Stacksteads, for about 15 years.

East Lancashire coroner Richard Taylor recorded a verdict of accidental death. He said Mrs Lord, who was able and independent, appeared to have overbalanced, fallen and suffered a nasty bang to her head.

Mrs Lord's son Brent said his mother used a walking stick outside, but not in the house. She took her time on the stairs as they were "not all that safe".

Pathologist Dr Abdul Al-Dawoud, who carried out a post mortem on January 21 said Mrs Lord died of head injuries.
