FIRE chiefs are investigating after 30 firefighters spent the early hours of Sunday morning tackling flames reaching 60 feet high in Leigh.

Six fire crews, including pumps from Leigh, Atherton, Bolton and Farnworth, attended the blaze at Bridgewater Business Park at 1.30am.

An area of 160 square metres filled with wooden pallets was well alight by the time crews arrived at Ashton Pallet Services, off Bridgewater Street West.

They battled with the flames for four hours and firefighters remained at the scene until Sunday afternoon.

Station officer Chris Ward from Leigh said: "We don't know how the fire started yet but investigations are underway.

"The only damage was to the pallets themselves, our local knowledge of the available water outlets meant we could put the fire out efficiently and save the buildings on all three sides of the yard. A number of people reported the fire as the flames had reached 50 or 60 feet by the time we arrived."
