CLITHEROE Golf Club's Winter League season ended at the weekend after five months of intensive competition.

Scott Thompson caught the handicap committee's attention with a formidable best six cards to win the single stableford competition with a 59 total score, 13 shots ahead of Connor McLaughlin and a further two shots better than John Pawson. Norman Fielding and Alf England took fourth and fifth spots with 242, creditable but no match for Thompson.

Peter Harrison and Arch Moro played some steady golf throughout the winter to take the Fourball Trophy, but it was a close run finish with the Peter Dunn/Andrew Walmsley duo failing by one point to take second spot.

George Stoddart with the help of Kenny Ward managed third place, five shots behind.

The aforementioned McLaughlin took the final weekend prize with an impressive 38 points in less than favourable conditions. P Bell followed with 36 points whilst Tim Stanley pipped competition chairman John Cartmell on the cards for third.

George Stoddart found a new partner in junior organiser Simon Hale to post an impressive 43 points on Sunday in blustery conditions, just edging house chairman Alf England and Andrew Wetton by one point with father and son David and Andy Heeson taking third spot with the same 42 points.

A final round of 69 in the Kenya Open at Karen Golf Club earned Clitheroe's Paul Dwyer a joint third finish and welcome prize money. His four rounds resulted in a seven under par finish just three shots off the 270 winning total by Sweden's Leif Westerberg. A welcome return to form for Paul which sets him up nicely for the coming season.
