BURY AMATEURS...0 NEWMAN COLLEGE...0: BURY Amateurs were desperately unlucky in dreadful conditions on Saturday, as they played out an entertaining draw with Newman College.

Playing the first half with the wind behind them, the hosts completely dominated the game and were unlucky not to score on a number of occasions.

Rick Stephens battled in midfield, and with Tony Jackson pulling the strings upfront, it was surely only a matter of time before a goal arrived.

The best chance of the game soon fell to Subachus who, having rounded the keeper, saw his shot cleared off the line.

It was good defending but it should have been 1-0. The second half may have brought an onslaught from the visitors, but Bury picked up the pace and played some lovely football against the strong wind.

Time after time they created half chances without reward.

De Pietro looked excellent on the left and Pete Gibson was a mountain in midfield, but as the game wore on neither side looked like scoring.

Then in the last minute a Gibson through ball set Tony Subachus on his way, he cut inside on his left and unleashed a left foot scorcher that an inspired keeper managed to claw away.

It was typical of Bury's fortune on the day, but despite dropping two points they can be proud of their second half performance.

The reserve team lost 3-1 at home to Old Mancunians on Saturday and will have to wait until the final game of the season to wrap up the league title; a point against the bottom side will ensure the trophy comes back to Drinkwater Park.

The first team are away to Chorley Motors this week in the Lancashire Cup. Players should meet 12.45pm at the Red Lion. There is no reserve team game.
