IT was cup final week for the Bury and District Table Tennis League, with teams competing for all five cups, resulting in some interesting finals.

In the Poytress Cup, two of the top teams in Division Three contested the final.

Elton Vale A were represented by Keith Mills, Rod Hall and David Hall, and playing for BGSOB A were Geoff Crowther, John Loftus and David Fletcher.

Although the result was a very emphatic 9-0 win to Elton Vale, all the sets were closely contested, with five of them going to four games and two of these going to a fifth.

Elton Vale always looked favourites to win though, from the moment Keith Mills came back from the brink of defeat to win the first set 3-2, after being down 2-0 against John Loftus, and it was fitting that he did exactly the same in the fifth set against David Fletcher to win the Cup for his team.

The holders for the past two years in the Dwyer Cup showdown, Ramsbottom A, were up against runaway leaders of Division 5, Holmar B, and both teams were playing in the first of their two cup finals of the week.

Playing for Ramsbottom were Mick Moir, Mark Candler, Jack Berry and Neil Cowburn.

Having to give away an eight point advantage proved too much for the Ramsbottom team and Holmar were comfortable 6-3 winners.

They won the first four sets before Ramsbottom could get on the score sheet, but in the sixth set of the match Trevour Candler beat Mick Moir to seal the win for Holmar.

Playing in their second final of the week, Holmar B were up against BGSOB B from Division 4 in the final of League Cup I, and had a four point advantage in this cup.

Holmar B were represented by the same three players as for the Dwyer Cup Final played on the previous evening, whilst Peter Gregory, Barry Warburton and Martyn Warburton were the players involved for the Grammar School team.

The fourth division team looked to be in top form when they took the first two sets, but when Neil Cowburn beat Barry Warburton 15-13 in the fifth game of the third set, Holmar could scent victory and went on from there to take the next four sets, enough to seal their second cup victory of the week.

They eventually went on to win the match 6-3.

The two top teams in Division One were in the final of the Macdonald Cup, Little Lever and Ramsbottom A who were playing in their second final of the week.

Playing for Little Lever were Don Durose, Steve McNicholas and Glenn Payne whilst Ramsbottom A were represented by the same three players who played in the Dwyer Cup Final earlier in the week.

After losing that final, Ramsbottom were determined to hang on to the MacDonald Cup, and after the first five sets were leading 4-1.

Ron Durose then beat Michael Moir to keep Little Lever in with a chance, but in the next set Dave Newton beat Steve McNicholas to ensure at least one cup for the Ramsbottom Club this season.

The last Cup Final of the week was the League Cup II between Hamer, the newcomers to the League this season from Division Three, and St Philips B from Division Two.

The three players representing Hamer were Phil Myers, Alan Hardman and Paul Whyatt and the three playing for St Philips were John Biggins, Dave Holden and Steve Barber.

Hamer enjoyed a three point advantage over their second division opponents and each set was closely fought with the score 2-2 after four sets.

Hamer began to make their advantage count in the next three sets, and in the seventh set of the evening Paul Whyatt beat Steve Barber 12-10 in the fourth game to win the cup for the Rochdale Club.

The final outcome of the Final was 6-3 to Hamer.
