POLICING will be stepped up in Holcombe Brook on Good Friday to put a stop to boozing in the streets.

New by-laws mean that it is now illegal to drink alcohol in certain areas of Ramsbottom.

Last year an estimated 2,000 people gathered in Holcombe Brook on Good Friday and a number of people were arrested.

Police have warned twice as many officers as usual will be on hand this year to put the ban into force.

Speaking at this week's Ramsbottom and Tottington Area Board, Insp Steve Clark said: "The ban on drinking includes the land opposite the Hare and Hounds pub."

"I would say to those who are planning to bring alcohol down on the day not to bother, because they will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Those who are caught drinking on the street will be asked to stop. If not, they will be arrested," warned the head of Ramsbottom Police.

In previous years, locals have complained of litter and rubbish left in the streets.

Insp Clark said: "On Good Friday, crime statistics often associated with alcohol such as assault and damage go through the roof.

"Contrary to what some people think, this ban is in place 365 days a year. I will have sufficient police officers, twice as many, on duty to enforce this ban. Alcohol can only be consumed within pub grounds."

Dorothy Gunther, chairman of the area board, urged people to "pray for rain" in a bid to keep people away from the area.
