MORE than 20 tons of litter and grime were being cleaned from the streets of Accrington every year.
To highlight the scale of the problem, council street sweeping was suspended for a day in Broadway, the market area and other parts of the centre.
Instead local shopkeepers took over the litter-picking duties. The tidy Britain Group's road show was also on Broadway to publicise the problems and eyesores caused by litter.
