LANCASHIRE'S seam attack produced an impressive performance as defending champions Sussex were bowled out for 195 on the first day at Hove.

Dominic Cork and Sajid Mahmood led the way with three wickets each as the Sussex innings lasted only 56 overs.

Both players picked up their first Championship wickets of the summer and Cork's haul included the prize scalp of overseas star Murray Goodwin.

It was a good all round day for the former Derbyshire captain as he also held two sharp catches at third slip. The second of these gave Mahmood the vital wicket of Chris Adams.

The wicket will have given Lancashire much pleasure after the pre-match comments made by Adams suggesting the Red Rose players were prone to complaining. Mahmood made sure that the Sussex skipper walked off with his tail firmly between his legs.

The young quick bowler, who impressed on tour with the England Academy this winter, came back to clean up the Sussex tail and finished with figures of 3-41.

Cork was impressed with his team-mate's efforts: "Saj was bowling into the breeze and he bowled very well. He looks a very good prospect.

"He was coming in fresh after he didn't play at Northampton. He has a nice easy run up that reminds you of Curtly Ambrose and he bowled with good pace."

If Mahmood can become half as successful as Ambrose, Lancashire will be served very well.

The only batsman to show much resistance was Richard Montgomerie, who carried his bat with an unbeaten 60 from 157 balls.

Despite the early loss of Mark Chilton, Lancashire will look to pile on the pressure.
