A 22-year-old man smeared the walls of a police cell with his own blood, Blackburn magistrates were told.

Nicholas Walsh, 22, of Highfield Road, Darwen, pleaded guilty to criminal damage and two charges of failing to surrender to bail. He was given a conditional discharge for 18 months, fined £90 and ordered to pay £50 compensation and £80 costs.

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said that when Walsh was arrested he had an injury which was bleeding.

"Out of frustration he struck the wall of the cell a number of times and as a result blood was smeared on the wall," said Mr Taylor.
