I AM writing with reference to Ian Hodgson's excellent letter of May 12, concerning the arrogance and complacency shown over Iraq, by our ruling leaders of both Britain and America.

Most sensible voters would think they had achieved what 'they' misguidedly set out to do in Iraq, against the majority consensus namely to rocket and bomb Baghdad into surrender, seek out the phantom weapons of mass destruction and capture President Saddam Hussain.

Now, wouldn't it be wonderful to have statesmen-like leaders such as our elected MP Jack Straw and Rt Hon Tony Blair set an example and a date now, after recent revelations to withdraw from Iraq by the autumn, encouraging America to do likewise.

Or will they further risk opening the gates of Armageddon frighteningly wider?

I feel as I'm sure countless other people do, as I'm 66 years old now, that we've witnessed a lifetime of conflicts and wars from Korea, Suez, Malaya, Vietnam, Palestine, Ireland, Falklands, Kosovo, Iraq-Kuwait and others.

Many inhumanity to man sadly continues and we never learn, bringing heartache to all people.
