A stunning strike from rampaging full back, Jason Heffernan, was enough to guide Miners to a seventh Hospital Cup success and their fourth in a row.

The livewire left back grabbed the only goal of the game after just five minutes after starting and finishing a wonderful flowing move.

Heffernan, received the ball off keeper James Dacey and burst over the halfway line, exchanged passes with Dean Stowe before beating Andy Blades with a pile driver from 30 yards.

It was a goal fitting of the occasion and capped off a man-of-the-match performance from the hustling-and-bustling Heffernan.

But the record-breaking Miners, who have won the competition more times than any other side, did not have it all their own way as they have had in recent finals.

So credit must go to Burnley Sunday League side, Havelock, who took the game the Miners.

And, unlike in previous finals, it was the Miners defenders and not attackers who took the plaudits.

For Heffernan, Darren Whittaker, Craig Whittaker and skipper Paul Keenan were all on top of their game to nulify Havelock's pacy attack.

In fact, it was a game dominated by both defences as clear cut chances were few and far between.

Havelock had early chances to get back in the game but James Gill and then skipper Barry Tomlinson both blasted wide when well placed.

Paul Stansfield was revelling in his role on the big stage and had a fascinating contest with the Miners midfield.

Tomlinson was lucky to stay on the pitch and not give away a penalty after 35 minutes when he appeared to bring down Carl Howarth in the area.

As the half drew to a close, Gill fired over the bar.

Miners emerged in the second half with striker Kiko Rodriguez in goal after James Dacey was injured in an accidental clash with Gill.

The match opened up in the second half but despite, Lee Howes and Adam Bullen both going close, there was no way through the Miners rearguard.

While it wasn't a vintage Miners performance, they still proved they are best team the Hospital Cup has ever seen.
